November 2025 Newsletter

Brothers and Sisters,

The last two years have been nothing short of amazing.  The 3rd Battalion 1st Marines Association has so much to be proud of. We implemented various initiatives and conducted several events between 2023 and 2025. During this time, we have met the requirements and have been designated a 501 (c) (3), reducing our tax liability and opening up opportunities to work with other philanthropic organizations. We have closed so much daylight between the association and the active-duty Battalion by supporting and participating in two 3/1 Days (March 1st) at the Battalion Headquarters. All the alumni of the Thundering Third who participated to make these events happen should be proud.

It has been our focus at the 3/1 Association to plan and execute a Battalion reunion every two years so that Marines can stay connected to their brothers and sisters in arms as well as the gold star families whose Marines gave the ultimate sacrifice for our beloved country.

In 2024, the 3rd Battalion 1st Marines Association conducted a mini-reunion weekend at Camp Pendleton. Along with the Warrior Reunion Foundation (WRF) to cover nearly all the reunion costs so our Veterans could just show up and enjoy themselves. From the nightly hangs at Camp Telega to the Cake Cutting ceremony at the San Onofre Beach Club, a good time was had by all.

In 2025, the 3rd Battalion 1st Marines Association conducted another reunion weekend in Southern California to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of our beloved Corps. Our Vice President coordinated with the Robert Irvine Foundation to cover the lion’s share of expenses for the 3/1 Association Ball in Laguna Hills. Melissa’s growing relationship with the leadership at the Battalion (BOTC!) and the Speak Their Names Foundation enables our members and Veterans to hike the Beast to the First Marines Memorial and honor our fallen veterans and gold star families.

Melissa’s personal actions have had a huge impact on the Association and its mission. The events and initiatives of the last two years would not have happened without her diligence and ability to connect the association with donors and volunteers. It was my honor to serve with her in the Association HQ, and it was my privilege to nominate her to be the next 3rd Battalion 1st Marines Association President. Melissa, we cannot thank you enough.

Looking forward to still having an active role in the Association as we move forward.

All the best and Semper Fi,

Brian G. Heatherman, LtCol USMC (Ret.)
